| Synthesis | Flavanthrone is prepared from 1-chloro-2-phthalimidoanthraquinone via the 2,2'-diphthalimido-1,1'-bianthraquinonyl, usingcopper in boiling trichlorobenzene. The alkalinering closure is accomplished by boiling with excess3 – 5 % sodium hydroxide, which cleavesboth phthalic acid residues simultaneously .
